Geoffrey Smythe

One vision. Every Frame. Start to finish.

Bare tree divider

I’m Geoffrey Smythe, an American video producer based in Japan. I’ve been living and working here for over fourteen years, and have been producing video professionally for more than a decade — including nearly ten years of in-house production experience at a Japanese interior products company.

What sets me apart is simple: I handle everything. From the initial concept and storyboard through cinematography, editing, motion graphics, sound design, and original music composition — I own the entire production process so you don’t have to coordinate between multiple creatives or agencies.

My background spans photography, animation, visual effects, and music production. I play guitar, bass, drums, and piano, which means the music in your video isn’t licensed filler — it’s composed specifically for your brand.

Fourteen years of living and working within Japanese business culture has given me a deep understanding of how creative work gets done here — the standards, the expectations, and the relationships that good work is built on. I work with translation support to ensure clear communication across both languages.

Lobtex

LED Work Light — Crowdfunding Video

Lobtex, a Japanese hand tools manufacturer, approached me to create a video promoting their new LED work light for a crowdfunding campaign. I developed two story concepts, pitched them to the client, and took the chosen direction from storyboard to screen — scouting locations, coordinating actors and crew, building props, translating the script alongside a native Japanese speaker, and handling all editing, music selection, and foley sound design. The campaign funded successfully.

BRUSHUP

Brand Video

An in-house production that I approached with the same discipline as client work. I presented five original story concepts, then developed the chosen direction in full alignment with the existing brand aesthetic — designing the set, coordinating costumes and props, and composing and recording an original piece of music to fit the brand’s creative vision. I coordinated a cameraman, set designer, and shooting schedule, shot stop motion animation sequences, and collaborated closely with an editor and the client through delivery. The video remains in active use as a core promotional asset.

Sown Seeds

Experimental Short

A self-directed creative work exploring the boundaries of visual and audio technique. Combining matched hyperlapse, green screen compositing, stop motion animation, and experimental sound design, almost every element was conceived, shot, and constructed by hand. A single external sound sample aside, this is entirely my own work.
